Neck pain
Neck pain is the most common auto injury, affecting up to 90% of auto injury patients. The crash can cause your body to move back with the seat while your head lags behind. This difference in movement triggers shear forces that can stretch and tear the ligaments and discs of the cervical spine. The body will then guard the joint immobilizing it to prevent further damage. However joints do need to move.
Studies show chiropractic care can prevent the buildup of harmful scar tissue and improve range of motion in patients with whiplash and neck pain after auto injury.
Low Back Pain
In rear-end collisions, the car seat can quickly straighten and compress the lumbar spine causing low back pain. This motion can injure the nerves and ligaments of the back, leading to tissue damage, inflammation, nerve injury, joint immobilization and pain.
Headaches
Most auto injury patients suffer from headache after the collision, and there are many possible causes. The most common headache after auto injury is cervicogenic headache, caused by irritation of the nerves in the cervical spine, or neck. Tension headaches are also common since a collision may cause injuries that result in muscle spasms.
Chiropractic has been shown to effectively reduce headache in a number of studies.
While prescription painkillers are effective for providing immediate pain relief, they are not a long-term pain management solution. Additionally, medication alone cannot help patients regain mobility in their bodies after a spine injury.
Chiropractic adjustments treat the underlying spinal injury or whiplash injury. Adjustments relieve pressure on the nerves and muscles, while also bringing proper movement back to the spine. Complementary therapies, including corrective exercises, will help bring a full range of motion back to the body.
