Tennis elbow
Tennis elbow, also called lateral epicondylitis, is an overuse injury to the tendons that connect your forearm muscles to the outside of your elbow. Tennis elbow is caused by an overuse of the muscles of the forearm, resulting in inflammation and sometimes tiny tears in the tendons of the muscles in your forearm. Tennis is of course a cause of tennis elbow, but many other activities may lead to this inflammation including: using a screwdriver, hammering, planting, raking and others.
Signs of tennis elbow include:
pain that radiates from the outside of your elbow to your forearm or wrist
pain when you touch the outside of your elbow
pain when you extend your wrist
a weak grip
a painful grip during certain activities such as turning a doorknob or shaking hands
Treatment should start off as conservative as possible. After an evaluation to determine if tennis elbow is the cause of your problem, rest and ice are the first courses of treatment. A chiropractic adjustment may be administered if it is found that the elbow joint isn’t functioning properly, along with work to the muscles involved to help reduce the tension in those muscles. Ultrasound is also commonly used on people with tennis elbow, which helps to reduce inflammation in the tendons involved. Modifications in your daily activities may be necessary, which your chiropractor can help you change. If conservative therapy is not helpful for a particular individual, medical intervention may be necessary and your doctor of chiropractic will refer you to the appropriate medical specialist if necessary. Medical interventions often include bracing, anti- inflammatory drugs, pain controlling agents, corticosteroid injections and possibly surgery, all of which can have negative side effects.
If you are experiencing the signs and symptoms mentioned above, you should seek the advice of a medical professional. If the problem is discovered and treated quickly, the healing time will be much quicker.
The Dangers of Aspartame and Artificial
Sweeteners
More and more people are hearing about the dangers of sugar and what it can do to your health. So the new trend is (and has been for awhile) to eat sugar-free foods. These sugar-free and diet foods are just as bad, if not worse for your health than sugar.
There are many kinds of sugar substitutes, one of the most popular being aspartame (Equal, Nutrasweet) although there are others. Yes, these sugar substitutes are approved by the FDA, but that doesn’t mean they are good for you. In fact, 85% of the complaints to the FDA are for adverse reactions to aspartame1. Since getting so many complaints about adverse reactions the FDA compiled a list of possible adverse reactions to aspartame2. These include:
Eye problems
Ringing in the ears
Neurologic problems (headaches, dizziness, severe drowsiness, tremors, “pins and needles” feeling
Chest( palpitations, rapid heart rate, shortness of breath, high blood pressure)
Skin/Allergies (severe itching, hives, aggravation of allergies)
Aggravation of diabetes symptoms
Joint pain
And these are just a few of the listed side effects! Aspartame can also mimic or worsen certain diseases such as:
Lupus
Brain tumors Multiple sclerosis
Epilepsy Chronic fatigue syndrome
Parkinson’s Disease Alzheimer’s
Mental retardation Lymphoma
Birth defects Fibromyalgia
Diabetes Arthritis (including Rheumatoid)
Chemical Sensitivities Attention Deficit Disorder
Aspartame can be found in many products such as breath mints, beverages, supplements, pharmaceuticals, cereals, infant formula and many more products.
Many people don’t realize they are having a reaction to aspartame (or other artificial sweeteners) because it is generally not an immediate reaction. The aspartame and by products build up in your body until you body can no longer handle the chemicals and you produce some symptoms. By removing aspartame from your diet, your body can heal and function properly again. If you have been having any of the symptoms listed above, check your diet and try eliminating the aspartame from it. The process of removing the toxins from your body often takes weeks to months so give it some time.
A good recommendation would be to eliminate artificial sweeteners, but not just go back to sugary foods. A diet abundant with sugar has its own issues. You can moderate sugary food intake with whole fruits which have fiber to slow the absorption, and use honey which contains sugar but also has health benefits. Also try substituting sugar with a Stevia, a natural Sugar substitute.
It is important for Consumers to be aware of what is in their foods. “Healthy” or similar statements on the box do not make it Healthy. Companies exist to make money and sell their product and will do what they can to market their product to the consumer.
Smoking is the single worse habit that’s considered detrimental to your health. It may be the only product that, when used correctly, actually kills you. Smoking is responsible for almost one in every five deaths, making it the leading preventable cause of disease and death in the United States. Each year in the U.S., 440,000 people suffer a tobacco-related death. Smoking kills more Americans than alcohol, motor vehicle accidents, homicide, suicide, illegal drugs and fires – combined.
Despite these well-known statistics, about 20 percent of adults smoke, and about 22 percent of high school students have adopted the habit. In fact, according to government statistics, every day about 3,000 young people join the ranks of smokers. And of the kids who continue to smoke regularly, about half of them will die eventually from a smoking-related illness.
Smoking damages nearly every organ within the body and causes numerous diseases. According to the American Cancer Society, it accounts for about one-third of all cancer deaths. It’s a major cause cancer of the lung, larynx (voice box), oral cavity (including the mouth and throat), esophagus, and bladder, and contributes to the risk of developing cancers in the pancreas, cervix, kidney, and stomach, along with some blood cancers. Sadly, about 87 percent of lung cancers are caused by smoking – lung cancer is now the leading cancer killer of men and women.
What Makes Smoking So Deadly?
Tobacco smoke contains over 4,000 known chemicals, including ammonia, carbon dioxide and tar. (Lowering the tar level does not minimize the health risk.) Among the identified chemical, more than 60 of them are known to cause cancer.
Smoking is also a major risk factor for heart disease, stroke, and a number of lung diseases – all leading killers. Smoking during pregnancy can lead to miscarriage, premature delivery and sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). And it’s not just smokers who are at risk: Secondhand smoke increases the risk of heart disease and lung conditions, especially asthma and bronchitis in children. Each year, secondhand smoke causes about 3,000 lung cancer deaths in adult nonsmokers. And take note: there are NO safe alternatives to cigarettes. Chewing tobacco causes cancer of the mouth, gum disease, and tooth loss, while cigar smoking causes cancer of the mouth, throat, and lungs and increases the risk of heart disease and chronic lung disorders.
